Why I Am Leaving America at 53
This is not a midlife crisis. This is a midlife awakening.
I did everything right.
I built a career. I showed up. I paid into systems that were never designed with me in mind. And somewhere between the hustle and the hope, I looked up and realized the life I had been building did not belong to me, it belonged to expectations. Other people’s timelines. A version of success that was handed to me before I ever had the chance to define my own.
At 53, I am done borrowing someone else’s blueprint.
The decision to leave America did not arrive as a dramatic moment. It arrived quietly, in the spaces between exhaustion and clarity. When I started researching what life actually costs in places like Portugal, Panama, and Vietnam and realized that a life I could only dream about here was fully within reach somewhere else - something shifted permanently.
This is not a midlife crisis. This is a midlife awakening.
The Numbers Made It Real
A family of four lives comfortably in Lisbon on $3,000 to $4,500 a month. In Panama City, that same family thrives on $2,500 to $3,500. In Hoi An, Vietnam, $1,800 to $2,800 covers everything - housing, food, school, culture, and breathing room.
Breathing room. When was the last time your budget included that??
For those of us with remote income, a pension, Social Security, or a service-based business we can run from a laptop, these numbers change everything. The math stops being a fantasy and starts being a plan.
What I Am Actually Leaving Behind
I want to be honest here because this decision carries weight.
Leaving America means leaving proximity to people I love. It means navigating systems in a new language, building community from scratch, and trusting myself in unfamiliar territory. Those things are real and I hold them seriously.
And still I choose this.
Because staying means accepting a cost of living that keeps climbing while wages stay flat. It means watching healthcare, housing, and safety become luxuries. It means trading the years I have left - my most intentional, most experienced, most powerful years - for comfort that was never that comfortable to begin with.
Black women especially carry this weight differently. We have been the backbone of families, communities, and workplaces for generations. We have given our best energy to systems that extracted it without reciprocating. At 53, I am redirecting that energy toward a life that gives back as much as I pour in.
The Strategy Behind the Move
Leaving with intention requires a real plan. Visa research. Financial mapping. Housing logistics. Pet relocation. Family conversations. Business continuity.
None of it is impossible. All of it requires clarity.
That is exactly why I built the tools and programs inside Boutique Deskai by Globifam because Black families deserve guidance through this process from someone who understands the full picture. The cultural nuance. The financial reality. The emotional weight of making a move this big.
The Global Scout report gives you a personalized deep dive into your specific destination - your income, your family structure, your lifestyle goals. The Global Compass program walks alongside you for 90 days until your plan becomes your reality.
The path exists. The resources exist. The only thing standing between you and this life is a decision.
My Decision Is Made
At 53 I am not running from anything. I am running toward everything I have earned the right to want. A slower pace. Deeper culture. A community of people building intentional lives. Financial breathing room. And mornings that belong to me.
The world is larger than the zip code that raised us. And we have every right to claim it.
So I will ask you directly:
What is the one thing keeping you from making your move?
