Me boarding my flight bound for Panama circa 2026.
Let’s be real for a minute.
Research feels productive. It gives you something to do with your hands while your heart is over here frozen, scared to make the actual decision. And that decision? It’s carrying a fear way bigger than which country or what visa.
So, let’s put a name to it.
Here’s what’s really running through your mind at 2am scrolling through the same five Youtube videos for the fifty-leventh time:
‘What if I mess this up and can’t come back from it.’
‘What if I sell the house, pull my babies out of school, cry and hug my mama at the airport... and get over there and it doesn’t even feel like what I thought I wanted.’
‘What if it doesn’t work out, and everybody who watched me post that announcement watches me pack it right back up too.’
Whew!!! Sit with that for a moment.
Now let’s talk through it, because you deserve the truth.
The fear of messing up for good: Every family I know who did this right built themselves a way out before they even booked the flight. Maybe that looked like a month-to-month lease, versus a year lock-in. Filed the residency paperwork knowing full well that permanent status takes time. Treated that first year like a trial run, with a return ticket in their back pocket just in case.
And that isn’t them being scared. That’s them being smart.
The fear that it won’t actually be better: Every single family tells me the same thing once they land: It’s still hard some days. The grocery store has them confused. The government office moves slower than a DMV on a Friday. Homesickness hits right around month three, right when the honeymoon phase is wearing off. But here’s what actually changes, and grown folks literally cry about this part: that tired feeling you carry every day back home, that feeling of ALWAYS bracing for something, always watching your back... it lifts. Right off your shoulders. Right out your chest. People feel that before they even know how to explain what’s different.
The fear of being wrong in front of everybody watching: This one cuts the deepest, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Posting your move online makes the pressure of the move feel so much bigger.
But…
It also builds you a whole army. The families who share their journey out loud end up with a community waiting on the other side, full of people who already lived through that terrifying first six months and know exactly what you’re going through.
Here’s what I know for sure: the people who make it out of research mode all got one thing in common. They stop waiting for the fear to pack up and leave, and they build the plan with that fear sitting right there at the table with them.
Research answers your questions. A decision moves your whole life.
So, if this touched something inside you, go ahead and hit reply and tell me where your family stands right now.
I literally read every single one myself.
