Miraflores and Costa del Este run higher - those lean more luxury. For $800-$900, San Francisco and Obarrio deliver solid mid-range living with good access to everything.

Food: $300 - $400/month
Local markets like Mercado de Mariscos keep your grocery bill lean. A full meal at a local restaurant runs $5-$10. Factor in a few nicer dinners and you stay comfortably under $400.

Transportation: $60 - $100/month
The Metro and bus system cover most of the city affordably. Uber runs cheap by U.S. standards. Many expats skip a car entirely.

Utilities + Internet: $150 - $200/month
Air conditioning drives the electric bill in the tropics - budget $80-$120 for electricity alone. High-speed internet runs $40-$60.

Nobody talks about the cost of staying.

We calculate the cost of leaving constantly. The visa fees. The flights. The storage units. The unknown. We run those numbers obsessively, looking for every reason the leap is too risky, too expensive, too uncertain.

Meanwhile the cost of staying runs quietly in the background, compounding every single year, and we never add it up.

I finally added it up. What I found changed everything.

The Financial Cost Nobody Names

Black women in America earn significantly less than their white counterparts for the same work. We pay more for housing in neighborhoods with less appreciation. We pay more for healthcare, more for childcare, more in the invisible tax of building wealth in a system designed to slow our accumulation at every turn.

I was working harder every year and the gap between my effort and my outcome stayed stubbornly wide. Not because I lacked skill or discipline. Because the environment I was building in carried a structural headwind that I was spending enormous energy just to overcome.

In Panama my dollar does not fight that headwind. A comfortable life costs a fraction of what it costs in most American cities. Healthcare is accessible and affordable. The pace of life returns hours to my day that America was quietly taking from me.

The financial cost of staying was not just the money I spent. It was the wealth I could not build, the time I could not reclaim, and the energy I burned just to stay in place.

The Psychological Cost We Normalize

This one took me longer to name because I had normalized it so completely.

The low-grade vigilance of moving through American spaces as a Black woman. The calculation that happens before I speak in a professional room. The energy spent managing other people’s comfort with my presence. The exhaustion of showing up fully in spaces that reward me for showing up small.

I did not realize how much that cost me until I spent time in spaces where I did not pay it.

That psychological tax is real. Researchers measure it. Doctors see it in our bodies. Black women carry it in our blood pressure, our cortisol levels, our sleep, our nervous systems. America extracts it from us quietly and consistently and calls it normal.

Leaving is not running from a problem. Leaving is choosing an environment where your full self does not cost you something every single day.

The Time Cost That Hurts Most

I am 53.

I spent years saying, “not yet.” Waiting for the right moment, the right amount of savings, the right level of certainty. And every year I waited, I spent another year in an environment that was costing me more than it was giving back.

Time is the cost of staying that you cannot recover.

I cannot get my thirties back. I cannot get my forties back. What I have is right now, and right now I choose differently.

The women I have watched make this move - at 40, at 50, at 60 - every single one of them says the same thing: “I wish I had done this sooner.” Not one has said “I wish I had waited longer.”

What Staying Was Costing Me That I Could Not Say Out Loud

My joy. My sense of possibility. My belief that the best chapters of my life were still ahead of me.

America had slowly convinced me that at 53 the building was mostly done. That the big moves were behind me. That comfort was the appropriate aspiration for this season.

Panama broke that lie open completely.

I did everything right.

I built a career. I showed up. I paid into systems that were never designed with me in mind. What Is an FBI Identity History Summary?

Most countries requiring a long stay visa or residency application ask for an official background check from your home country. For U.S. citizens, that document is your FBI Identity History Summary, commonly called an FBI background check or FBI clearance letter.

Spain, Portugal, Panama, Mexico, and Costa Rica all require this document as part of their visa process.

Two Ways to Get It

Option 1: Direct Through the FBI

You apply directly at fbi.gov, submit your fingerprints, and pay $18. The turnaround runs 6 to 8 weeks in 2026 due to historically high demand driven by a surge in international relocation and immigration processing.

This option works well when your visa timeline gives you plenty of breathing room.

Option 2: FBI-Approved Channelers

Channelers are private companies the FBI authorizes to collect your fingerprints and submit them directly to the FBI on your behalf. Because they have a dedicated submission channel, results come back in 3 to 5 business days.

Cost runs $50 to $75 depending on the provider, which covers both the FBI fee and the channeler’s service fee.

If your visa appointment lands within 60 days, a channeler is the move. The time savings far outweigh the extra cost.
